Arlo Mountford, 100 Years, 2016

Arlo Mountford, 100 Years, 2016

Installed at Sutton Gallery, the exhibition 100 Years included two works, the digital animation, 100 Years 2016, and the kinetic sculpture Clock 2016. The animation was in part a centenary homage to Kasimir Malevich’s The Black Square 1915, a work famous indicating a break between representational and abstract painting. Each minute of the animation’s 100 minute duration is a moving image homage to an abstract work made in the 100 years since this break. In contrast to the historical nature of the 100 Years, Clock acted as a representative of time, the dried gourd turning every 3 minutes sending the sound of the falling seeds inside it throughout the gallery.
