Arlo Mountford, The Triumph 2010

The Triumph, 2010

HD digital animation, stereo sound.

Made at the same time as The Folly, The Triumph can be seen as a counter point to the sublime nature of that work. It is also based on a painting by Pieter Bruegel, the Elder titled The Triumph of Death 1562. An early work by Bruegel, which has similarities to the paintings of Hironimus Bosch, it depicts skeletons rising from hell to punish the living for their sins. In The Triumph I have replaced the skeletons with cultural figures from the 20th Century.

A solo exhibition at Latrobe University Museum of Art curated by Ryan Johnston titled The Vanishing Point of Art History featured The Triumph amongst other works. His catalogue essay can be read here.
